  59. 1.  About StepUp'96
  60. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  62. StepUp'96 is a set  of utilities designed to extend the Windows user
  63. interface.  When  you  install  StepUp'96,  additional  commands are
  64. added to the menus and taskbar of Windows, making you able  to  work
  65. with Windows easier and faster.
  66.  
  67. StepUp'96 resembles best  features  of  its  predecessor, FM StepUp,
  68. featured in many leading publications, such as PC MAGAZINE,  WINDOWS
  69. MAGAZINE,  WINDOWS  WORLD,  WINDOWS  USER, and rated *Five Stars* by
  70. Ziff-Davis Interactive.

  72. Features of StepUp'96 include:

  74. o  StepUp  Menu,  accessible  from  the  context  menu  or  taskbar,
  75.    containing commands which you can use to process files or folders, 
  76.    open new browsing windows, run files, etc.

  78. o  Folder  Navigator,  accessible  from the context menu or taskbar,
  79.    allowing you to quickly open the folder you need.
  80.    
  81. o  Menu Designer, allowing you to add new commands  to  StepUp  Menu,
  82.    modify its existing commands to make them better suit your needs,
  83.    move menu items between submenus, etc.

  85. o  File  Handler,  designed   to  perform  various  file  management
  86.    operations in a way similar to that of File Manager.

  88. o  Taskbar Icons,  allowing  you  to  quickly  logoff, shut down, or
  89.    reboot your computer, toggle the CDROM  Autorun  feature  on/off,
  90.    access the commands of StepUp Menu and Folder Navigator.

  92. o  Context-sensitive  Help  provides  a  complete  user's  guide for
  93.    StepUp'96.

  95. o  Automatic Setup utility, allowing you to  painlessly install  and

  110. 2. System requirements
  111. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  112.  
  113. StepUp'96  is  designed for operating systems Windows 95 and Windows
  114. NT (version 4.0 or higher).   1  MB  (one megabyte) of free space on
  115. your hard disk is required  to  install  StepUp'96.   There  are  no
  116. special  requirements or recommendations except the obvious one: the
  117. better processor and more RAM your computer has the better StepUp'96
  118. will perform.

  120. NOTE: throughout StepUp'96 documentation, "Windows" is used to refer
  121. to Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.  In those few instances where  the
  122. operation  of  StepUp'96  under  these  operating systems differ, an
  123. explicit operating system name is used.
  124.  
  125. StepUp'96  can  be  installed  and  used  under  Windows 95 Beta and
  126. Windows NT 4.0 Beta, although the installation utility will warn you
  127. about that.
  128.  
  129. StepUp'96 CANNOT be installed and used under the following operating
  130. systems:
  131.  
  132. - Windows 3.1/3.11, even if Win32s is installed
  133. - Windows for Workgroups 3.11, even if Win32s is installed.
  134. - Windows NT all versions prior to 4.0.

  137. 2. Installing and uninstalling StepUp'96
  138. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  139.  
  140. StepUp'96 comes with a convenient and flexible Setup utility,  which
  141. allows you to both install and uninstall StepUp'96.
  142.  
  143. NOTE:  it is NOT sufficient to simply copy StepUp'96 files onto your
  144.    hard disk to install  it.   You  MUST  run Setup.exe to configure
  145.    your system and enable all StepUp'96 components.
  146.  
  147. NOTE to  Windows  NT  users:  if  you  have  a  different version of
  148.    StepUp'96 already installed in your system, you  MUST  deactivate
  149.    it  before  installing  the  new version.  The reason for that is
  150.    that Windows NT will not  allow to replace the existing Stepup'96
  151.    files which are in use.  When you run Setup, it will not  install
  152.    the  new  version  of StepUp'96 until you deactivate the existing
  153.    one.  This does not apply  if  you  use Windows 95: the new files
  154.    will be copied by Setup over the existing  ones.   
  155.    
  156.    To  deactivate  the  existing  installation  of  StepUp'96,  open
  157.    Control Panel, choose  'Add/Remove  Programs' and double-click on
  158.    "Chaosoft StepUp'96".  When the "Uninstalling  Stepup'96"  dialog
  159.    box  is  displayed, select the "Deactivate all components" option
  160.    and choose OK.
  161.  
  162. To install StepUp'96:
  163. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  164. a) If  you have obtained StepUp'96 as a compressed file, uncompress
  165.    the file into a temporary folder  on  a hard disk, or on a floppy
  166.    diskette.
  167.    
  168. b) Open folder containing the uncompressed set  of  StepUp'96  files
  169.    and double-click 'Setup' (or 'Setup.exe').
  170.    
  171. c) The Setup utility will suggest you the folder in which to install
  172.    StepUp'96.   You  may  accept  the  suggestion  or  choose  other
  173.    location for StepUp'96 files.  You can also  specify  whether  to
  174.    add StepUp'96 items to Start Menu and whether to create a Desktop
  175.    folder for StepUp'96 components.
  176.  
  177. d) Setup utility will copy  the  files into the specified folder and
  178.    configure Windows for using StepUp'96.
  179.    
  180. e) At the end of the installation procedure Setup will prompt you to
  181.    enter  your  name and Registration Code.  If you have purchased a
  182.    license  for  continued  use   of  StepUp'96  and  received  your
  183.    Registration Code, you  may  enter  it  at  that  time,  and  the
  184.    evaluation  version  of  StepUp'96  will  be  converted  into the
  185.    registered one. Otherwise, you may skip entering the registration 
  186.    code and StepUp'96 will operate in the evaluation mode.

  188. f) After the installation  has  been  complete, you may delete files
  189.    from  the  temporary  folder,  from  which  you  were  installing
  190.    StepUp'96.
  191.  
  192. To uninstall StepUp'96
  193. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  194.  
  195. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete files from the StepUp'96
  196.    folder to completely uninstall it.  Please follow  the  procedure
  197.    described  below  to uninstall StepUp'96 and clean up your system
  198.    configuration:
  199.  
  200. a) Open folder  'Control  Panel'  and  double-click  on  'Add/remove
  201.    programs'.
  202.    
  203. b) In the list of  products  which  can be uninstalled find the line
  204.    "Chaosoft StepUp'96" and double-click it.
  205.    
  206. c) The "Uninstalling StepUp'96" dialog box will appear prompting you
  207.    to confirm that you want to uninstall StepUp'96.  You may  choose
  208.    to  deactivate all StepUp'96 components, delete its application 
  209.    files, delete user files related to StepUp'96, and/or reset 
  210.    StepUp'96 settings.
  211.    
  212. d) After the uninstalling procedure has been finished, you may  need
  213.    to  go  to  the  folder  where Stepup'96 files were installed and
  214.    delete remaining files.  If you  are  running Windows NT, you may
  215.    need to logoff and then log back on before Windows permits you to
  216.    delete the files.

  220. 4. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software

  223. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.   This  is  software
  224. which you can "try before you buy".
  225.  
  226. You  may  install  the  program  in  your  system  and use it for an
  227. evaluation period of  up  to  14  days.   After  that  time, you are
  228. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software  or
  229. else  stop  using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  230. copies of StepUp'96 provided  that  all  conditions specified in the
  231. distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement
  232. in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  234. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  235.  
  236. There  is  NO  functional  difference  between  the  evaluation  and
  237. licensed  versions  of  this  software (except for the 'registration
  238. reminders', displayed by the evaluation version after the evaluation
  239. period has ended).  Actually, it's the same program: you may convert
  240. an evaluation copy to a registered  copy by entering your name and a
  241. Registration Code.  Similarly, a registered copy of the program  may
  242. be  'unregistered'  by  deleting  the  registration  code or by just
  243. copying the program to another machine.

  245. Evaluation copies of our products are  100%  fully  functional.   We
  246. make  them  this  way  so you can have a real look at them to decide
  247. whether or not they fit  your  needs.  Please understand that if you
  248. fail to register, and continue to use  StepUp'96  beyond  the  eval-
  249. uation  period  without  paying  for it, don't expect the program to
  250. maintain  its  original  functionality:  some  features  may  become
  251. disabled.  If you need more time  to decide whether you want to keep
  252. the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend the  evaluation
  253. period.   However,  we  cannot  afford  to  let  you use the program
  254. without compensation.  In addition,  it  is  unfair to our customers
  255. who  do  register  to  use  the   program.    We   appreciate   your

  276. How to purchase a license for use of StepUp'96

  279. ChaoSoft  licenses   the   software   on   the   'per-user',  not  a
  280. 'per-computer' basis.  This means that you  may  purchase  a  single
  281. individual  license and use StepUp'96 on more than one computer (for
  282. example, a desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the
  283. only user of those computers and  there is no possibility to use the
  284. Registered Copy of StepUp'96 by anybody else.
  285.  
  286. On the other hand, if more than one person uses  a  computer,  every
  287. such  user  must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  288. the software, or  a  site  license  for  the  total  number of users
  289. accessing the computer must be obtained.
